Police Uniforms and Equipment

Uniforms

Welcome to cop-shopper.com. This website is an informational overview of some of the equipment police officers use in their line of work. From cuffs to tasers, there’s a police gear for everyone here.

Handcuffs are one piece of police equipment almost every officer carries. Modern handcuffs come in a few types. The classic handcuff type consists of two ratcheting metal cuffs attached by a short chain. These cuffs are compact, and usually effective. However in situations where increased control of a detainee is required solid piece cuffs may be used. These cuffs are a single block with two ratcheting openings in it. The solid block allows police to maneuver both of the subjects arms with a single hand rather than trying to wrestle with the chain of traditional cuffs.

A new plastic wrist restraint has been gaining popularity in recent times. Plastic cuffs consist of either a single piece of molded plastic, or two connected plastic straps. These cuffs are similar to plastic cable restraints, they zip closed and are cut loose from the subject to release. They are cheaper than handcuffs, but less secure. They are usually used for temporary detention of a large number of subjects. They are non-reusable but their low cost makes up for the single use nature of the cuffs.

What would a cop be without a police badge? They would be just another person with a gun. Badges are not unique to the police force, but they see their most prominent use there.  The most common varieties of police badges are the shield and sheriff’s star types. The sheriff’s star is the badge of western movie fame. We’ve all seen the gritty sheriff chase the bad guys out of town, and that too is part of the mystique a police badge captures.

Another easily recognizable sign of police authority is found in an officer outfitted in tactical or riot gear. Riot gear is what police wear to protect themselves when engaging in crowd control. The shields, helmets, and batons are recognizable anywhere. When a swat team is going into a dangerous confrontation you will see them outfitted in tactical gear. Whether it’s the body armor, the high caliber weapons, or high tech gadgets; you know there’s no messing around when you see an officer equipped like that.

Police uniforms have come a long way from their humble origins. Police work was common long before a uniformed police force came into existence. In England for example, the first police forces simply wore trench coats. Eventually things like helmets and badges worked their way into the uniform, and now a uniformed officer is something easy to spot, even at a distance.
